Dokdo Museum

Dokdo Museum presents a collection of materials related to all aspects of Dokdo, and exhibition of historical materials in which Japan acknowledges the sovereignty of Korea over Dokdo, such as a number of maps and literature produced and published by Japan from the 16th century to the modern era. In addition, materials that show the historical changes in Dokdo since the day of National Liberation and those related to the Dokdo Volunteer Forces, a volunteer garrison who dedicated their lives to protect Dokdo, are also on display.

The Dokdo Museum, opened in 1997, has been promoting national awareness and consciousness on national territory and identity through permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions with various themes every year. An international academic conference (Ulleungdo Forum) was launched in 2010, and since 2013, exhibitions touring the country in Korea and special overseas exhibitions have been held every year. In August 2016, the remodeling of old facilities in the Dokdo Museum was conducted to provide a more pleasant exhibition space to visitors. In 2018, the Dokdo Theater was additionally opened and the animation ‘Dokdo Sea Lion in our hearts’ started to be shown in the theater.
