Research Contents and Outcomes
  • The research project “Sustainable Research and Development of Dokdo” has carried out integrated scientific research on the sustainable management and future use of Dokdo. The depositional environments and tectonic structure around Dokdo and the environmental characteristics of seawater circulation and its properties around Dokdo have been studied. The diffusion of these research results has promoted official international recognition of the geographical designations “Dokdo” and the “East Sea.” The project has published a pictorial ecology guidebook that includes the distributions of marine organisms and explanations of species diversity and habitat characteristics around Dokdo. The deep-sea environment around Dokdo has been studied using a remotely operated vehicle, and efforts have been made to maximize the utilization of these Dokdo data. Also, benthic habitat mapping and coastal environment monitoring around Dokdo have been conducted to evaluate future sustainable spatial use of the area. A database for the sustainable use and management of Dokdo has also been constructed.
  • The research project will now extend to the development of a reconstructive simulation of the origin of the Dokdo volcano, the construction of a simulation center for Dokdo, development of an observation and monitoring network of the ocean and seafloor around Dokdo, and eventually, the creation of a scientific submarine research station for more advanced temporal/spatial observations.
Applications
  • Increased use of the Dokdo area and enhancement of national policies concerning Dokdo
  • Promotion of official international recognition of the geographical designations of “Dokdo” and the “East Sea”
  • Establishment of the foundations for future sustainable spatial use of Dokdo
